Finding Your Voice: Breaking the Silence on Recovery

Recovery is often described as a path, a climb, or a battle. In reality, it is a conversation. For too long, these conversations have stayed in the shadows, muddled by shame or silenced by social stigma.
At Delaware Psychological Services, we believe healing begins the moment we stop whispering. That’s why we’re hosting Voices of Recovery, a one-hour workshop designed to replace isolation with honest dialogue.
Why "Voices" Matter
Isolation feeds stigma. When we fear the judgment of neighbors, colleagues, or family, the "voice" in our head telling us we are alone grows louder. By dedicating an hour to sharing and listening, we do something radical: we humanize the statistics.
Our workshop focuses on four key pillars:
De-stigmatization: Moving beyond labels to see the person behind the struggle.
Connection: Realizing that many in our community share your experience.
Education: Identifying the psychological barriers that make it hard to "just talk about it."
Empowerment: Learning how to advocate for yourself or a loved one.
Understanding the Weight of Stigma
Stigma isn’t just "being mean"; it is a clinical barrier to mental health. When we hear a peer speak with grace and vulnerability, we chip away at these barriers.
Type of Stigma | How it Manifests | The Impact |
Social Stigma | Public prejudice and discriminatory labels. | Fear of seeking help due to "what people will think." |
Self-Stigma | Internalizing negative stereotypes. | Low self-esteem and a "why bother" attitude toward treatment. |
Institutional Stigma | Systemic barriers in healthcare or legal policies. | Reduced access to high-quality, compassionate resources. |
What to Expect: A Gentle Approach
This is not a therapy group, a confrontation, or a lecture. It is a welcoming, low-pressure space for everyone—whether you’re in recovery, supporting a loved one, working in the field, or simply curious.
In this free, 1-hour session, our facilitators will:
Unpack Stigma: Discuss its real impact on Delaware families.
Share Art & Story: Introduce the Voices of Recovery storytelling and art initiative.
Build Support: Explore practical strategies for championing recovery and reducing shame.
Provide a Path: Detail local resources and clear next steps for support.
Your Participation, Your Choice
Recovery is a symphony, not a solo act. While we value every voice, there is no expectation for you to share your personal story. You are welcome to come alone or with a friend; participation can be as simple as sitting back and taking it all in.
Healing Through Language
This workshop explores the "math of empathy" by shifting our narrative. Small changes in how we speak create a fundamental shift in how the brain perceives change:
Old Narrative: "He is an addict who can't stay clean."
Recovery Narrative: "He is a person navigating a complex health journey and is working toward stability."
By using person-first language, we leave room for hope and a future.
Join the Conversation
You don’t need to be an expert or have all the answers; you only need to bring your humanity. Voices of Recovery is more than an event—it’s a commitment to a healthier, more connected Delaware.
